Our 6th grade students went on their first field trip on the year on December 7, 2016! We packed up extra water, snacks and a pencil and made the 2 miles walk from Spurgeon to Santa Ana College. The students had a great time walking through their community and getting a good amount of exercise! Once we got to Santa Ana College, the students were given a map of the campus and given a "selfie challenge" in which they had to find 10 different SAC buildings and take a selfie with their group in front of them. We also had many groups interviewing current SAC students and available professors. After all that walking our students were thirsty, so we made a quick trip to Starbucks for refreshments! In all, our students walked 6 miles, learned a lot about our local community college and had a great time bonding with their peers!

Our Spurgeon 8th grade female AVID students were proud to partner with Valley High School to attend the 2016 Concordia University Latina Conference on October 22. Eleven students came to school at 7:15 AM to get on a bus and head to Irvine for a day full of inspiration and information. The day started with an enriching speech from Alejandra Ceja, a first generation college student that now works alongside President Obama in Washington D.C. to promote educational excellence for all Hispanics. Our students then heard from Michele Martinez, councilwoman of Santa Ana (and Spurgeon Alum!) and heard her heartwarming story of her determination and perseverance to succeed in high school, college and now to be a proud representative of the city of Santa Ana.
Our students then went to "breakout sessions" in which they learned about different majors, such as biology, education, business and communication. We ended our time eating delicious food in the CUI cafeteria and looking through the many booths at their Information Fair. Thank you, again, to Valley High School and Concordia University for making this trip possible! We had a great time! |
